A journey of faith built by the community

The First Shiva Temple in Lisbon, Portugal.

From the creation of the association in 1984, to the formal temple project in 1991 and the Bhumipujan in 2001, this history has been shaped by families, volunteers, spiritual leaders and generations of the Hindu community in Portugal.

Timeline

1984

The Association is founded

The Associação de Solidariedade Social Templo de Shiva was established in Santo António dos Cavaleiros to bring the Hindu community together and support religious, cultural and social life.

1991

The project takes shape

The association formalised the temple project on land made available by Câmara Municipal de Loures in the Torres da Bela Vista area.

2001

Bhumipujan — 26 August

The blessing of the land marked one of the central milestones of the temple project and strengthened the community’s connection to the site.

A story that continues

The temple continues worship, festivals, education and community activities while the vision of a permanent temple continues to advance.

Architectural Project

A vision designed for worship, culture and community

The historic project is attributed to architect José Deodoro Troufa Real and was conceived for the approximately 17,050 m² site made available by Câmara Municipal de Loures.

The concept brings together socio-cultural areas, worship and temple space, covered parking, Kund, outdoor parking and a memorial garden while preserving traditional architectural references associated with Shiva worship.

Living Memory

History continues through today’s celebrations
